Fall 2017 Design Trends

What To Look For

The changing seasons offer a great opportunity to mix up your décor – but before you start pulling out last year’s collection, find new inspiration from these current trends that are popping up in the most stylish houses around the world.

These new looks will work for any season, but with an emphasis on luxury, comfort, and natural textures, they’re a perfect fit for welcoming the cool autumn weather.

Fall colors

In a dramatic shift from last year’s whites and greys, fall 2017 will see the return of color – dark, intense color. Shades of black have already been selected by at least three paint companies as their 2018 Color of the Year, but if you’re still intimidated by black paint, there are other trendy colors to consider.

Jewel tones: Rich shades of chocolate brown, aubergine, navy blue, and dark forest green are great options for fall. Add a bit of on-point luxe by replacing any lighter-colored throws and pillows with darker shades.

Moody shades of green are especially popular this upcoming season, bringing a bit of the outdoors in as the weather gets cooler. Green makes a great statement on your walls or furniture, but adding a couple houseplants is enough to embrace this growing trend. Don’t get a fiddle-leaf fig, though – they’ve had their fifteen minutes of fame, and the next must-have bit of foliage will be the olive tree.

Blush: While other muted pastels like dusty blue and sage green are on their way out, blush seems to be here to stay. Home accents still showcase this soft hue in a range of shades, and it’s one of the easiest colors to incorporate into your existing design. You can find blush-colored glassware, pillows, rugs, and more.

Fall materials

More and more, our homes are becoming an escape – our refuge from a technologically-driven, on-demand world. Fall trends embrace this yearning for peace and tranquility with a push toward organic, natural materials. Keep an eye out for oversized, cozy furniture with clean linen slipcovers, Icelandic sheepskins, and chunky knit rugs, as well as earthy accent items made of wood, clay, cork, or worn metal.

Terra cotta: Gone is last year’s cool, white marble – this season, it’s all about warmth. Terra cotta tiles are back, but not the glossy borders you might remember from the 1980s. In fall 2017, this classic earthenware will sport a matte finish and be used to tile feature walls or fireplaces.

By opting for a matte finish and opting for a more modern styled tile, you can avoid terra cotta’s traditionally rustic look and end up with a subtle hint of soft coziness – and a bit of added character.

Woven textures: Baskets, rattan, jute rugs, and knit wool throws are back in style this fall – and just in time, because these organic materials add plenty of depth and comfort to any room, especially during colder weather. Collect warm blankets in a big round basket, use wicker stands to hold houseplants, or try a pendant lamp with a woven shade.

Rough textures look great layered together, but try to include smoother materials like glass, ceramics, and mirrors to achieve a balanced design.

Velvet: This luxurious material begs to be touched. Velvet is perfect for fall decorating, and looks even better paired with the rough, natural textures that are also on trend this season.

If you have the budget to invest in a new sofa, accent chair, or upholstered headboard, velvet is a great choice for this fall. You don’t have to spend to achieve this look, either – bring in a hint of luxury with a velvet throw or pillow. For double the impact, choose something glamorously jewel-toned.

Brass: Copper and rose gold are no longer the on-trend metals for 2017 – this fall, it’s all about classic, aged brass. This retro-feeling material can make a great statement when incorporated correctly into a contemporary design, and you’ll be seeing plenty of it as the seasons change.

This metallic finish is especially eye-catching when used in furniture, like in Anthropologie’s Velvet Cardiff Sectional. Or, look for brass lamps, side tables, and frames for mirrors or artwork to make a subtle statement.

Fall looks

Autumn trends in 2017 are all about making an impact. From dramatic colors to unique linens, this season offers plenty of opportunities to incorporate some intriguing (and affordable) design choices. If you’re sick of open floor plans with stark white walls, you’re not alone – this fall, interiors are all about privacy and comfort.

Matte black: Fixtures, lighting, and even appliances all feature matte black options this season, shifting to more of an industrial aesthetic than the glitz we saw last year. It’s simple and understated, and works well with the darker paint colors and natural textures that are trendy this fall.

Statement ceilings: Accent walls are a great way to create architectural interest – but this season, it’s all about the statement ceiling. This part of the room is often overlooked, but more and more homeowners are starting to incorporate elements like shiplap, wooden beams, tin or embossed foam, textured wallpaper, or even just a bold color to make their ceilings stand out.

Creative bedding: It’s not just about crisp, white linens anymore – today’s bedding is about adding drama and interest to the room. Beautiful patterns, touchable textures, and even old-fashioned quilts are making a comeback. Fall bedrooms should have a comforting, homey feel, providing the ideal retreat from the stresses of modern life.

Moody interiors: This cozy vibe continues right through the house with the rising popularity of dark paint colors, jewel-toned accents, and rough textures – evoking serious emotion and adding a little playful mystery to your space.

While the best design is always one that’s comfortable and cozy for you, small changes in your décor with a new season is a nice (and inexpensive) way to refresh your space. For a little more inspiration, check out some of our top picks for this fall.
